VHS Hannover offers an Escape Game to make people better acquainted with how the EU works, especially how decisions in the EU are taken. The game was developed as part of an Erasmus+ cooperation project, has been used dozens of times so far with both adults and students, and has proven to be very effective in getting people involved in thinking about the EU and its legislative processes.

Participants take on the role of scientists who have invented an asteroid shield to protect Earth from an imminent impact, but they need money for setting up the shield. In order to get the funding from the EU, they have to find out how decision making in the EU works. As the asteroid is approaching very quickly, they have only one hour time for this.

The game is played in a classroom of VHS Hannover, decorated with posters and other props mostly related to the EU. Working together as a team, they have to find their way through the riddles and tasks hidden in the props, and thus to make sure the EU secures the funding for the asteroid shield. Afterwards, the groups discusses, led by an experienced pedagogue, their experience, and recollects what they learned about the European Commission, the Parliament and the Council. Usually, this leads to a discussion of how to become an Member of the European Parliament, who can vote, etc. For playing, groups of 5-10 participants are required who enrol together to one of the dates offers.

For dates offered from 18/12/2023 to 22/12/2023, see the VHS Hannover website www.vhs-hannover.de. Go to "Kurse" and search for "Asteroid Alarm".
